Anselme Selosse, Visionary or Madman?
The answer depends on one’s perspective, but in 1980s Champagne he was probably thought a bit mad. Today, Jacques Selosse Champagne is highly sought after and regarded as one of the best in the industry.
Anselme’s Selosse’s father, Jacques Selosse, started producing and bottling Champagne in 1960 instead of selling grapes to the grand marques. Anselme took over the family vineyards after studying at the Lycée Viticole de Beaune, where he was influenced by greats like wines and wine makers like those at Coche-Dury Lafon, and Domaine Leflaive. Anselme applied Burgundies thinking about production and terroir to his Champagnes, starting a revolution in the the Champagne region. He has in turn been influential on many growers in Champagne.
Anselme was a pioneer in small grower estates, terroir, single vineyard bottling, biodynamic viticulture, and low to no dosage offerings. His Champagnes are among the best and most profound, aging for years and increasing in value.
